Cherry blossom in Stockholm

Posted by

Cherry blossom is taking place in Kungsträdgården in the Swedish capital Stockholm right now. It is a bit later than normal, due to the cold spring. But it is beautiful.

The tree is called Prunus Accolade and is a an English hybrid between P. sargentii and a form of P. x subhirtella from Knap Hill nurseries in 1952. It has profuse semi-double pale pink flowers 30-40 mm in diameter in clusters of 3 with deep pink buds. They normally open in April and cover the tree like a pink cloud. The leaves are toothed, bright green turning orange-red in the autumn. It forms an open-topped tree growing up to 6-7 meters high by 6-7 meters wide.
