Muay Thai at Lumpini in Rama IV is history

Posted by

So this is the last weekend of Muay Thai or Thai boxing at the classic Lumpini arena on Rama IV. After 57 years they move the arena to Ramintra Road outside the Bangkok center. What that will mean to lure tourists there will remain to see. It is rather painful to get there, especially on Fridays which is the best day at Lumpini. I hope to get over there soon to see how it is like. There is also an increase in the ticket price. At the new arena it will cost 2,500 baht to get a ringside seat.I think lot of vendors will suffer as well.

For sure the new arena looks very nice and modern. But I will missed this legendary landmark with its tin-roof, dusty ceiling fans and fairly basic settings. Some pics from Lumpini boxing stadium from earlier events. More on Flickr here.
